TCG > What We Do > Information Structuring
Information structure is a collective term for the rules and conditions that govern how information is sorted, ranked, classified, and linked to sources and stakeholders.
In practice, it refers to how documents are organized, how documents are connected to objects, how information is linked to both documents and objects, and how everything is related to processes, stakeholders, and other entities.
In the context of asset or facility information, information structure concerns how data about the facility can be intelligently connected to relevant stakeholders and processes — as well as which applications should support that integration.
Information structure is essential to ensure that the right stakeholders can both produce and consume information — by first making it findable.
It is only when information (e.g. drawings, models, data sheets…) can be found that it can be used effectively and kept up to date.
Without a clear structure, certain information becomes inaccessible — and therefore not maintained.
This leads to a situation we’re all too familiar with: outdated information that’s hard to find.
What we’re experiencing today is the result of weak information structuring — with vast amounts of data left unmanaged and adrift.
We call it the era of data chaos.
When it comes to organizing information, no structure feels more logical than your own.
Each role within an organization brings its own perspective, priorities, and time horizon — which makes it difficult to agree on a unified approach for classifying, ranking, and relating objects.
The strength of ISO/IEC 81346 lies in its ability to accommodate multiple, simultaneous structuring needs, allowing each role to access the information from their specific context.
At TCG, our expertise lies in translating these diverse needs into a cohesive information model, regardless of discipline or domain.
Using a robust methodology based on ISO/IEC 81346 — combined with our collective know-how — we create reference designations that interlink existing naming standards while preserving legacy identifiers.
The result is a structured, flexible, and future-proof digital representation that strengthens information management and delivers real business value across the entire organization.
Through years of research, customer projects, internal development, and contributions to both national and international standards, TCG has built unique expertise in structuring information for a wide range of purposes.
Depending on the value streams you aim to support, we can offer best practices tailored to your specific needs — whether it’s optimizing your information structure for maintenance, operations, production, engineering, new construction, analytics, or even all of these combined.
Backed by modern standards, taxonomies, and ontologies, we maximize value creation while minimizing complexity.

An information structure that can’t be implemented in your application environment holds little value.
TCG’s method and toolbox help you establish the right conditions within your system landscape.
We are application-agnostic and support you regardless of platform — assisting with requirements definition, configuration, master data management, and system portfolio alignment.
Not everything is possible in every platform — but we help you make the most of what is.
At TCG, we are experts in a wide range of information structuring standards.
Standards provide the foundation for consistent reasoning and shared principles — forming the basis of a common language.
But our experience ensures that their application remains flexible enough to adapt to specific “dialects” in your organization.
Here are some of the core standards that form the backbone of TCG’s best practices, where we bring deep expertise:
